Maven's Mission

Hello, and welcome to my site.  The purpose of this blog is to create a connection between beaders around the world.   Here and now I extend the invitation to all of you, beadwork artists and appreciators of their work, to join me in my journal, post comments and link to me from their sites.  We already have a common thread.  Let's extend this network so we can share knowledge, inspiration, and The Beader's Muse.

DEADLINES

Monday, September 28th, 2009 - You must place an order for a contest kit by this date.  If you are from out of the country, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you place your order as soon as possible before this deadline.  I am unfamiliar with the exact different shipping times for the other countries so if you are concerned about having enough time to complete your entry, you should sign up as soon as you can to allow for any shipping delays.  I am not responsible for kit delays do to customs. Important Note: Kits are shipped in batches. The first batch of kits does not ship out for 2-3 weeks.  That is why the time to order kits has been extended.  If you order in the first few weeks, it is technically a pre-order but you will be of the first to get your kit, and if kits sell out, you will be glad you signed up early.  Batches after that mail out about twice a week.

Monday, November 9th, 2009 - Your entry form is due by this date. The information needed includes your name and contact information with a title, description of your piece (100 words or less), and up to 2 digital images of your finished piece.  I will email all participants a digital entry form.  Please do not email your entry separately, all of the info needs to be in one place, on the form.

Winners and entries will be posted on The Beader's Muse within approximately 3-4 weeks of the submission deadline.  This time-frame depends on the volume of entries and the fact that I do all the web development myself!

RULES

The main rule is DO NOT REVEAL THE MUSE.  The mystery of the MUSE is half the fun!  DO NOT REVEAL any identifying details of the MUSE in a public forum or on your website before the "BIG REVEAL" on www.thebeadersmuse.com.  It's okay if you say it is a component from Artbeads.com, as I have already shared that publicly.  Other than that, do not post pictures of your piece that contain the MUSE on public websites or blogs. Everyone likes a good surprise so please help keep it hush-hush.  If anyone ruins the fun, they will be disqualified! If you just can't help yourself, please keep conversations between participants in private communications.  It benefits all of us, because more onlookers will tune it to see the "BIG REVEAL" if they are curious about what the MUSE component was.

Your entry must be a piece of wearable art.  Jewelry items, and accessories like brooches or belt buckles are acceptable.  If you have any questions about whether your idea is acceptable, please contact me before creating your entry.

You may use as much or as little of the kit as you choose, as long as you USE THE MUSE!  You are encouraged to incorporate beads, findings, and objects from your own personal stash.

You may submit up to THREE entries for consideration... but you must purchase a separate kit for each entry you intend to submit.  The kit fee includes all of the beads you see pictured in the photo, the MUSE component, and your entrance fee. I will not be accepting returns, and once you receive your kit, it is up to YOU to get your image entry in on time according to the deadline. Late entries will not be accepted, do to the fact that there will only be two weeks of judging and deliberation, before winners are announced.

By entering this contest, you give permission for the images of your design to be featured in promotional material for The Beader's Muse, Artbeads.com, and Tierracast.  If we ever choose to display your designs on one of the sites, we will credit your name with the design.

INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPANTS

If you are signing up from another country, please be aware that is your responsibility to follow the outlined rules and deadlines.  If you need them translated to your language, it is your responsibility to do so. If you are unclear on any rule, please contact me so that I can help you.  I am unable to make exceptions to the rules because people misinterpret them.  I will also need your entry form to be in English. If you are available to help with translating participants emails to English, please drop me a note.  I am confident in the days of Google translator, and other avenues, we should all be able to make sense of everything.  We are all beaders!  Thank you for your understanding.

For the USE THE MUSE III, I still have the same strict kit limit so that I don't end up with more people signing up than I have the ability to make kits for.  This is also to allow a fair prizes to participants ratio. If it is important to you to participate, please, please, order your kit early on.  Once I run out, that's it, so it is first come , first serve.  Kits sold out BEFORE the deadline last contest! If you have reached this contest page and you would like to participate, but kits have already been sold out, please drop me an email and let me know that you were interested and what country you are from.  This way I have an idea of how many participants to allow for future contests.  Thank you so much for you help!

JUDGING CRITERIA

      STACY               SCARLETT               STEFI

I will be judging your entries with the help of my lovely judging panel which includes my mom Stacy, and my best friend Stefi.  My mom introduced me to beads when I was little, and I introduced Stefi to beadweaving. They both have enough beadweaving experience to appreciate the time put into it, as they usually proof my instructions for BEADWORK magazine before I submit a project.  They both always have a stringing project that they just finished and a beadweaving project in the works.  They are fun artistic women, with different styles and tastes!  We will be judging entries on a few points:

  • We will mainly be looking at the creative use of the kit, and the MUSE component.  The winning entries will be well thought out and show original vision and design ability.  They will use the components in a truly unique, beautiful, or strikingly simple way. Sometimes the best piece might be the most laborious one, and sometimes it might be a less fussy design that is just simply stunning.  This is why the contest is on a short timeline, we are not looking for the most over-the-top creation.  We are looking for the most beautiful and artistic one.
  • We will also consider what you chose to incorporate from your own stash, how well it goes with the kit, and how it enhanced your entry.
  • We will be judging for quality, and looking for pieces that were crafted with care and attention to detail.
  • We will be looking at the artistic merit of each piece along with it's wearability.

USE THE MUSE III

In addition to the three grand prize winners, we will be selecting 10 CATEGORY PRIZE Winners for this event.  You can see on the Winners page, that during the last contest we assign extra categories for outstanding submissions.  We will be doing this again so that submissions of all styles and levels of complexity can be acknowledged.  Please be aware that we want to represent as many mediums and ranges as possible.  Even if you are new to beading, there will be categories that your submission can fit into.  Do your creative best with the kit, and we will do our best as judges to represent the different design views.

We are so looking forward to your entries!  Have fun designing and please contact me with any questions regarding these guidelines.
